Severe Winds Cause Power Outages and Fatalities in Western Washington
Western Washington has been grappling with severe weather conditions after a «bomb cyclone» brought strong winds to the region, leading to widespread power outages and at least one fatality. The storm significantly impacted areas along the Washington coast, the east Puget Sound lowlands, and regions near Bellevue.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a high wind warning, anticipating winds of 30-40 miles per hour, with gusts potentially reaching up to 65 miles per hour. As a result, as of Tuesday evening, at least 460,535 homes and businesses were without power across western Washington.
Meteorologist reports indicated substantial wind speeds, with gusts recorded at 77 mph at Sunrise at Mount Rainier, 74 mph in Enumclaw, 57 mph in Federal Way, and 55 mph at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Some areas along the Puget Sound shoreline were under a wind advisory, with gusts up to 50 mph expected.
Compounding the severe weather situation, Sound Transit announced «significant delays» on the 1 Line, also acknowledging outages at several 2 Line stations, further disrupting local transportation.
The harsh weather has also proven deadly. South County Fire reported the death of a woman in her 50s in a homeless encampment off Alderwood Mall Parkway in Lynnwood due to a fallen tree. Officials reported no other injuries associated with this incident.
Emergency services were stretched as Eastside Fire and Rescue identified multiple trees that had fallen onto buildings by late Tuesday afternoon. First responders have urged the public to avoid outdoor travel if possible, highlighting the dangers posed by downed power lines.
Authorities are advising the public to remain at least 30 feet away from any downed power lines due to the risk of electrocution, as such lines can still be energized. If a downed line poses a life-threatening situation, such as causing a fire or contacting an occupied vehicle, the public is instructed to call 911 immediately.
