Ed Sheeran Aids Ipswich Town in Player Signing Before Sharing Stage with Taylor Swift
Ed Sheeran, the globally renowned British singer-songwriter, is known for his chart-topping hits, but recently he has gained attention for his involvement with Ipswich Town, a football club close to his heart. According to reports, Sheeran played a pivotal role in helping the club secure the signing of a key player during the summer transfer window.
Mark Ashton, Ipswich Town’s Chief Executive Officer, shared the anecdote during a Soccerex industry event in Miami. «In the summer, we were trying to persuade one particular player to join the football club and realized very quickly that he was an Ed Sheeran fan,» Ashton revealed.
Sheeran, who is a minority shareholder in the club and its shirt sponsor since 2021, joined a Zoom call with the player just moments before performing on stage with Taylor Swift at Wembley Stadium. Ashton stated, «Hopefully that was a key part in getting the player across the line.» Though the player was not officially named, Ashton noted that «he’s certainly scoring a few goals,» hinting at a successful acquisition.
Sheeran’s support appears to have been influential in the signing of Sammie Szmodics from Blackburn. Szmodics, who was the top scorer in the Championship last season, joined Ipswich a day after Sheeran’s intervention. Following his spectacular overhead kick goal during Ipswich’s match against Tottenham earlier this month, Szmodics posted a photo with Sheeran on Instagram, captioning it with enthusiasm.
During the event, Ashton praised Sheeran’s involvement in the club, saying, «He’s a local man, a global superstar, sponsor of the football club, now a shareholder and now officially a part of our recruitment team.»
Ed Sheeran’s commitment to Ipswich Town, which has recently returned to the English Premier League after a lengthy absence, underscores his continuous support for his home team. His passionate involvement has undoubtedly broadened his influence beyond the music industry, adding a unique element to Ipswich’s business and sporting strategy.
