Sheetz Reduces Gas Prices Ahead of Thanksgiving Travel Rush

Sheetz, a prominent gas station and convenience store chain, has announced a significant reduction in fuel prices at certain locations, just ahead of the bustling Thanksgiving travel period. As reported by CNN, the price cut affects the Unleaded 88 fuel, which will be sold at a discount of 40 cents per gallon until the end of November. This reduction is available at 505 out of the chain’s 750 locations, primarily across the mid-Atlantic region.

The decision comes as gas prices, already lower than last year’s figures, encourage increased consumer travel. According to AAA, the national average for gas prices now stands at $3.06 per gallon, a decrease from $3.30 per gallon during the same period last year. In 31 states, prices are recorded below $3 per gallon.

Sheetz’s price cut is strategically timed with AAA’s prediction of a record number of Thanksgiving travelers, estimated at nearly 80 million, which marks an increase of 1.7 million from the previous year. Ninety percent of these travelers are expected to travel by car. Patrick De Haan from GasBuddy noted that gas prices are stabilizing after periods of volatility due to the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions, specifically referencing Russia’s actions.

Despite the allure of cheaper prices, consumers are advised to check the compatibility of Unleaded 88 with their vehicles. The fuel, also known as E15, contains 15% ethanol and is generally approved for use in 2001 or newer model cars, trucks, and SUVs. It is not suitable for motorcycles, heavy-duty vehicles, off-road vehicles, and older conventional vehicles.

Sheetz has recommended customers use their app or visit their website to confirm the availability of Unleaded 88 at their nearest stations. They also offered a similar promotion last Thanksgiving, highlighting the chain’s efforts to boost sales through strategic discounts.

Fuel consumption efficiency is a factor to consider, as Unleaded 88 typically results in a 1% to 2% reduction in fuel economy compared to regular gas. However, given the price cut, many consumers might find the trade-off beneficial. Relatedly, Circle K has also announced a 40-cent discount per gallon during select hours, underscoring a trend among fuel retailers to leverage price cuts ahead of peak travel seasons.
