Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce Surprises Fans by Withdrawing from 100-Meter Semifinals
In a surprising turn of events at the Stade de France, Jamaican sprinting legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce pulled out of the women’s 100-meter semifinals just minutes before the race was set to begin. Fans were left in shock as they saw her lane empty, especially after she had been warming up just two hours earlier.
No official reason was given for Fraser-Pryce’s sudden decision, leaving many to speculate about what could have led to her withdrawal. This marked another disappointment for Jamaican sprinting fans, following fellow athlete Shericka Jackson’s earlier announcement that she would also skip the 100 meters.
With Fraser-Pryce out of the race, American sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson saw a chance to shine. Richardson advanced to the finals after finishing second in her semifinal heat, right behind Julien Alfred from Saint Lucia.
Interestingly, Fraser-Pryce wasn’t the only one facing challenges that day. Videos surfaced showing her and Richardson struggling to get past security to reach the warm-up track. Eventually, Fraser-Pryce was allowed in, although it’s unclear if this incident affected her decision to compete.
As the semifinals started, rain began to fall at the stadium, which might have also played a role. While the stands were covered, the track itself was exposed to the elements, potentially creating uncomfortable racing conditions.
Fraser-Pryce, who has been a dominant force in track and field since her Olympic debut in 2008, previously won gold medals in the 100 meters during the Beijing and London Games. Her teammate Elaine Thompson-Herah had already announced her withdrawal from this year’s Olympics due to an Achilles injury, further adding to the family’s worries.
As the day progressed, eyes turned toward the finals, where Richardson and her fellow American teammates, including Melissa Jefferson and Twanisha Terry, would compete for medals in what’s turning out to be a dramatic event.
