Sherwood Returns for a Second Series with New Characters
The popular BBC series Sherwood is set to return for its highly anticipated second series on August 25th. The show, which captivated audiences with its gripping narrative surrounding two murders in a former mining town, will introduce two new characters, Ryan and Stephie Bottomley, portrayed by newcomers Oliver Huntingdon and Bethany Asher.
In addition to the fresh faces, many familiar actors are returning, including David Morrissey and Lorraine Ashbourne. The new cast members received positive acclaim from their colleagues. Actor Sharlene Whyte commended Oliver Huntingdon for his raw and edgy portrayal, while David Harewood highlighted the significance of working with talented young actors from Nottingham.
The character Ryan Bottomley, portrayed by Oliver, is introduced during a dark period in his life, reportedly committing a grave crime. However, as the series progresses, it is suggested that audiences will come to see a deeper and more relatable side of his character.
Following a presentation of the show’s summary, it has been revealed that the second season will be set in the present day, featuring two new families connected to the Sparrows. Additionally, there will be a subplot where a new sheriff challenges plans for a proposed mine in the area, which raises questions about jobs and community trauma.
In an interview, creator James Graham commented on the real-life inspirations behind the series, reflecting on his own experiences growing up in Nottinghamshire. The first season, inspired by actual events, is followed by a continuation that delves into local tensions and organized crime in the community.
The narrative intends to tackle unresolved issues within the community while exploring themes of legacy and social contracts with police. Filming for this series has taken place in locations around Nottingham, including Ashfield, where Graham spent his formative years.
As anticipation builds for the new series, audiences are reminded of the first season’s success and the compelling storytelling that has drawn viewers in.
