Sidney Crosby Engages in Rare On-Ice Fight as Penguins Fall to Jets
Sidney Crosby, captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, is known more for his skills with the puck than for dropping the gloves. However, on Friday night, the seasoned forward engaged in a rare on-ice altercation with Winnipeg Jets‘ player Kyle Connor. This incident occurred during a highly anticipated NHL game, attracting the attention of hockey fans for its unexpected nature.
As reported by HockeyFights.com, Crosby has been involved in fighting on very few occasions throughout his two-decade-long career in the National Hockey League (NHL). The last recorded fight for the Penguins’ star forward was on October 6, 2023, against Peyton Krebs of the Buffalo Sabres.
Despite the spirited effort by Crosby, it was the Winnipeg Jets who emerged victorious, defeating the Penguins by a score of 4-1. This victory marked the 17th win for the Jets in their first 20 games of the season, underscoring a strong start in their campaign. Pittsburgh Penguins, on the other hand, continued their struggle, marking their seventh loss in the last 10 games.
The Jets set the tone early in the game, with Nino Niederreiter scoring his eighth goal of the season within the first 90 seconds, giving Winnipeg an early lead. The momentum did not shift in favor of the Penguins during the second period either. Vladislav Namestnikov added to the Jets’ tally, followed by Gabe Vilardi, who scored his eighth goal on a power play, making it 3-0 by the second intermission.
In the third period, the Penguins made an effort to stage a comeback, with Michael Bunting scoring a goal to inject some life into the Penguins’ offensive push. However, Winnipeg maintained their defensive prowess, and Kyle Connor secured an empty-net goal to finalize the game’s scoreline.
The Penguins, with a current record of 7-11-4 for the 2024-25 NHL season, are looking to turn their fortunes around as they face off next against the Utah Hockey Club. This matchup is part of a three-game homestand at Pittsburgh’s PPG Paints Arena.
