Significant Snowfall Disrupts Northwestern New Jersey
In New Jersey, a persistent storm has blanketed parts of the state with up to 20 inches of snow as it delivered the first snowfall of the season to several areas, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) on Friday. Northwestern regions, particularly those at higher elevations, experienced the heaviest snowfall, while other parts saw much-needed rain.
High Point State Park recorded the highest snow total, with 20 inches accumulating in the area. West Milford saw 7.5 inches of snow, while schools in the region opted to close due to the weather conditions. These closures included High Point Regional Schools, Vernon Township Schools, Netcong Schools, and West Milford Schools.
A winter weather advisory remained in place for Morris, Sussex, and Warren Counties until Friday afternoon, with authorities warning of potential power outages caused by snow-laden tree branches and strong winds. In Morris County, snowfall totals ranged from 3 to 4 inches, whereas Bergen County recorded less than 2 inches.
Despite the substantial amounts of snow in certain parts, the snow event was notably elevation-dependent. Sparta, also located in Sussex County near High Point, reported only 1.3 inches.
The NWS in Mount Holly indicated that the storm was expected to taper off by Friday evening, with the possibility of light additional snow overnight. Forecasts suggest that the weekend will bring dry but breezy conditions, with potential weather changes anticipated for the following week, possibly affecting Thanksgiving travel plans.
As the snow began to diminish, drier and milder conditions were expected for the weekend, although some gusty winds were forecasted for both Saturday and Sunday. The next significant weather system could impact the region as the week progresses, potentially bringing showers that may affect holiday travel.
