Singapore Airlines to Launch Operations at Western Sydney Airport
Singapore Airlines is set to become the first international airline to operate from the upcoming Western Sydney Airport, according to a commercial agreement signed by both parties.
This deal marks a significant milestone for the airport, located at Badgerys Creek, ahead of its scheduled opening to the public in late 2026.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed enthusiasm about the agreement, highlighting the economic advantages for the western Sydney region. He stated, «This investment will connect Badgerys Creek to Marina Bay, boosting jobs and investment opportunities in the area.»
Construction progress on the new airport has exceeded 80 percent, with an expectation to handle approximately 10 million passengers annually once it opens.
The announcement follows a recent federal government white paper addressing the aviation industry, which recommended consumer protections, including the establishment of an ombudsman to oversee airline compensations for delayed or cancelled flights.
Despite improvements suggested in the white paper, legal experts have raised concerns that the proposed measures may not meet international standards, particularly regarding compensation rights for Australian travellers.
Flight Centre CEO Graham Turner acknowledged the importance of the proposed changes while urging caution regarding their potential impact on airlines, given the complex nature of flight delays and cancellations.
Meanwhile, the CEO of Western Sydney International Airport, Simon Hickey, highlighted the advantages of the airport’s 24-hour operations, which allow greater scheduling flexibility for airlines and travellers.
Singapore Airlines’ Regional Vice President South West Pacific, Louis Arul, noted that the new partnership aims to improve network connectivity for travellers between Sydney and various global destinations.
