WH Smith Vegan Wrap Recall Amid E. coli Outbreak Concerns
A third food manufacturer has initiated a recall of products over potential E. coli contamination concerns, with vegan chicken and bacon wraps exclusively sold at WH Smith being affected. The company behind the product, THIS!, has taken the step as a precautionary measure, emphasizing that there have been no detections of E. coli in the specific wrap. This move comes following similar recalls by Greencore Group and Samworth Brothers Manton Wood of various pre-packed sandwiches, wraps, and salads available in leading supermarkets.
The ongoing outbreak of E. coli in the UK has impacted over 200 individuals, with 42% of cases resulting in hospital admissions based on data up to 11 June. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has advised consumers who have purchased the THIS! wrap with a use-by date until 18 June not to consume it and to return it for a refund. Investigations are underway to identify the source of the E. coli contamination, which has been linked to widely available food items.
Notably, Greencore Group has recalled 45 products sold in prominent supermarkets, while Samworth Brothers Manton Wood has recalled 15 products from Tesco and One Stop. Dr. Sarah Pitt, a virologist at the University of Brighton, explained the complexity of tracing the bacteria’s source due to the delayed presentation of symptoms after consuming contaminated food, noting that the illness is particularly severe in vulnerable groups.
Darren Whitby from the Food Standards Agency highlighted that the recall of sandwiches, wraps, and salads is a precautionary action in response to the ongoing E. coli outbreak caused by Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (Stec). E. coli bacteria encompass a range of strains, with some causing serious illnesses such as bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, and vomiting.
The latest figures reveal 211 confirmed cases of E. coli as of 11 June, with at least 67 individuals needing hospital treatment. The recall alerts issued by food manufacturers aim to ensure consumer safety in light of potential contamination risks. Consumers are advised to follow hygiene protocols and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms, as E. coli infections can lead to severe complications including kidney damage.
