Snow Falls on Table Mountain Amidst Cold Weather in Cape Town
Cape Town experienced a significant drop in temperatures on Wednesday, leading to a light dusting of snow on the famous Table Mountain. The snowy conditions were a result of a cold front that brought damaging winds, affecting various areas of the city.
The South African Weather Service reported that maximum temperatures reached only 12°C on Wednesday. This unusual weather prompted the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway and SANParks to confirm the snowfall, sharing videos on their social media platforms.
In addition to the snow, the adverse weather conditions resulted in considerable disruptions across the region. The Cape Town disaster risk management center indicated that the strong winds uprooted trees and damaged property, particularly at the entrance of a shopping center.
Spokesperson Sonica Lategan stated that city services have been activated to address the fallen trees and to clear affected areas. Reports noted incidents in Tierboskloof, Kenilworth, and Bishop Lavis, and no injuries were recorded during the storm.
Further assessments by disaster management teams revealed roofs were blown off in neighborhoods such as Silvertown, Bonteheuwel, Wynberg, Gugulethu, Heideveld, and Kenilworth. Humanitarian relief partners are preparing to assist residents with essential items including blankets and food parcels.
