Sony Announces Cloud Streaming Beta for PlayStation Portal
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced the rollout of a new software update for its PlayStation Portal, introducing a beta version for cloud streaming. This development allows PlayStation Plus Premium members to stream select PlayStation 5 games directly from Sony’s servers, expanding the capability of the device beyond its initial local streaming feature from a PS5 over Wi-Fi.
The PS Portal is a dedicated remote play device that initially launched to enable users to stream games from their PS5 console within the same network. However, the new cloud streaming feature, now in its beta phase, marks an evolution in the device’s functionality, allowing users without a PS5 console to enjoy gaming through the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog.
The cloud streaming functionality is currently available in beta form, and Sony notes that the features and user experience may change over time. During this trial period, the cloud streaming supports a resolution of up to 1080p at 60 frames per second. However, several PlayStation Plus features, such as Game Trials, party voice chat, game invites for select games, 3D audio, and in-game commerce are not available at launch.
Access to cloud streaming on PS Portal will be available to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers in a wide array of countries including Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States among others. To participate in the beta, users are required to update their PS Portal to the latest system software and have a stable internet connection, with Sony recommending a minimum of 13 Mbps for 1080p streaming quality.
In addition to cloud streaming, the new update for PlayStation Portal includes enhancements in the audio experience, such as adjustments to the minimum volume level and the ability to modify audio settings directly from the device’s settings menu.
As the PlayStation Portal’s cloud streaming capability is being trialed publicly, Sony encourages feedback from users to improve the final experience. It remains to be seen how this feature will evolve and what additional functionalities might be integrated as the beta progresses.
