South Africa Elections 2024: Results Awaited Amidst High Voter Turnout
The Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced that the results of the 2024 South African elections, the most highly contested since the end of apartheid, are expected to be released by Sunday. With over 27 million registered South Africans lining up at more than 23,000 polling stations, this election has seen massive participation.
More than 1.6 million citizens applied for special voting which occurred on Monday and Tuesday ahead of the main election day, signifying the immense interest and engagement of the electorate.
Observers from within South Africa and other countries are closely monitoring the conduct of the elections to ensure transparency and adherence to democratic processes.
IEC Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Masego Sheburi highlighted the efficient counting process that is underway, estimating that initial results from small voting stations would be available by late evening. The Commission plans to release the final results on the fourth day to account for the complexity introduced by the third ballot.
President Ramaphosa praised the IEC for its meticulous preparation and execution of the elections, acknowledging the critical role the Commission plays in upholding the country’s democratic values. The successful voter registration drives, party registrations, and overall election readiness demonstrate the capability of the IEC in managing the electoral process.
