South Africa‘s President Cyril Ramaphosa revealed the much-anticipated cabinet lineup late on Sunday, marking a significant moment in the country’s political history. The newly appointed cabinet, which comprises a blend of members from the ruling Africa National Congress (ANC) and the erstwhile opposition Democratic Alliance (DA), reflects a groundbreaking shift towards coalition governance in South Africa.

Ramaphosa strategically retained control of pivotal ministries such as finance and defense for the ANC, signaling continuity amid economic challenges. Notably, Enoch Godongwana, a familiar face in economic circles, will resume his role as Finance Minister, tasked with steering the nation through its current fiscal difficulties. Meanwhile, John Steenhuisen, the DA’s leader, assumes the position of Minister of Agriculture within the diverse cabinet.

During the announcement, Ramaphosa emphasized the commitment of all parties to upholding constitutional values, including transparent governance, data-driven policymaking, and the promotion of professionalism and integrity in public service. This collaborative approach aims to instill good governance practices across the board.

The historic coalition government emerged following the outcome of South Africa’s recent election on May 29, which saw the ANC falling short of a parliamentary majority. In a strategic move, the center-right DA, as the second-largest vote-getter, joined forces with the ANC to establish a coalition government, facilitating Ramaphosa’s reappointment as head of Africa’s leading economy.

Over a span of two weeks, negotiation processes between the ANC and the DA culminated in the formation of a government of national unity, involving representatives from nine additional political parties. The deliberations, which underscored the complexity of power-sharing dynamics, were characterized by intense discussions over ministerial allocations and structural roles within the cabinet.

As South Africa grapples with persistent challenges related to poverty, inequality, and high unemployment rates, the effectiveness of Ramaphosa’s coalition cabinet remains uncertain. With unemployment figures hovering at 32.9%, the collaborative efforts of the ANC, DA, and other coalition partners will be closely scrutinized in their approach to addressing the nation’s pressing socio-economic issues.
