South African Special Forces Pioneer, Col Jan Breytenbach, Passes Away at 12:30 on Father’s Day
South Africa mourns the loss of the esteemed Col Jan Breytenbach, the revered founding father of 1 Reconnaissance Commando (Recces) and commander of 32 Battalion, who passed away peacefully at the age of 84 on Father’s Day at 12:30.
A retired South African Special Forces officer, Col Jan Breytenbach is celebrated for his instrumental role as the first commander of 1 Recces, the pioneering special-force unit in South Africa. He also notably led 32 Battalion and 44 Parachute Brigade during his distinguished military career.
Col Breytenbach’s legacy includes the establishment of 1 Recce on 1 October 1972 in Oudshoorn, a unit which later moved to the city of Durban, leaving an indelible mark on the special forces landscape.
Throughout his life, Col Jan Breytenbach authored several military and nature conservation books, showcasing his diverse talents and contributions to both the armed forces and environmental causes.
Col Jan Breytenbach leaves behind his beloved family; his wife Rosalind, son Richard, daughter Angela, and his grandchildren Christopher and Matthew, who held a special place in his heart and will continue to honor his memory.
