English halfback, Lewis Dodd, has made the decision to join the South Sydney Rabbitohs for the 2025 NRL season, declining the option to remain with St Helens in the Super League. The news comes after Dodd’s standout performances, including a memorable winning field goal against Penrith in the 2023 World Club Challenge.

Sources reveal that South Sydney’s recruitment head, Mark Ellison, is scheduled to fly to England to finalize the deal with Dodd and other potential signings. This move signifies the Rabbitohs’ proactive approach in bolstering their squad for the upcoming seasons.

At South Sydney, Dodd is anticipated to provide depth and competition in the halves department, currently occupied by Cody Walker and Lachie Ilias. With Walker and Ilias both facing uncertainties beyond this year, Dodd’s arrival adds both skill and versatility to the Rabbitohs’ playmaking options.

Aside from the halves, Ellison is also expected to be on the lookout for reinforcements in the front-row and winger positions. The Rabbitohs have faced challenges in their outside backs due to injuries, emphasizing the need for additional quality and depth in those areas.

While the focus remains on immediate matches, particularly the clash against reigning premiers Penrith, South Sydney’s CEO Blake Solly acknowledged the need for improvement during the club’s current board meeting. The Rabbitohs sit at a concerning 1-6 start to the season, putting pressure on head coach Jason Demetriou.

Demetriou, who succeeded Wayne Bennett at the beginning of the 2022 campaign, is under scrutiny following the team’s recent struggles. The board will assess all aspects of the club’s performance, including discussions about the NRL team and potential strategies for a turnaround.

Despite the challenging start to the season, the Rabbitohs are looking towards long-term solutions, with Lewis Dodd’s acquisition marking a significant step in their recruitment plans. The excitement around Dodd’s arrival signals a new chapter for South Sydney as they aim to revitalize their NRL campaign.
