Sri Lanka Claims First Women’s Asia Cup Title, Defeating India
In an exciting final match of the Women’s Asia Cup held in Dambulla, Sri Lanka made history by claiming their first title, defeating India by eight wickets.
The match started with India winning the toss and opting to bat first. India set a target of 166 runs, ending their innings at 165 runs for the loss of six wickets. Smriti Mandhana played a crucial role, scoring 60 runs off 47 balls, while Richa Ghosh contributed with a quick 30 runs towards the end.
Sri Lanka’s chase began with a hiccup as they lost their first wicket early. However, captain Chamari Athapaththu and Harshitha Samarawickrama settled the innings back on track, with Athapaththu scoring 61 runs. Samarawickrama remained unbeaten on 69 runs, guiding Sri Lanka to a remarkable victory in just 18.4 overs.
With this win, Sri Lanka not only broke India’s dream of securing the title for the eighth time but also marked their first triumph in the Women’s Asia Cup. Indian team, known for their strength in women’s cricket, took part in their ninth final match but couldn’t manage to defend their title from the previous year.
