Sri Lanka’s Spin Wizardry Secures Victory Over India
Sri Lanka pulled off an impressive 32-run win over India in the second ODI held in Colombo on Sunday, taking an early lead in the three-match series. The standout performer for Sri Lanka was Jeffrey Vandersay, whose remarkable six-wicket haul for just 33 runs left the Indian batting order completely shaken.
India was chasing a target of 241, but they found themselves in a tough spot after starting strong. Rohit Sharma, with his explosive 64 runs off just 44 balls, alongside Shubman Gill’s 35, seemed to set a solid foundation for the team as they reached 97 for one. But everything changed dramatically once Vandersay struck.
The dismissal of Sharma, caught off a reverse sweep, marked the beginning of a quick downfall for India. They went from a comfortable position at 97 for one to a dismal 147 for six in a matter of just 10 overs. Vandersay exploited the spin-friendly conditions perfectly, taking out key players like Virat Kohli and Shivam Dube with his crafty bowling.
Despite a valiant effort from Axar Patel, who scored 44 runs and tried to revive India’s innings, the team could not recover. He was eventually caught off Charith Asalanka’s bowling, extinguishing any hope of a comeback for India. The Indian side was bowled out for 208 in 42.2 overs.
Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka batted first and faced some challenges themselves, particularly against India’s spinners Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav. Despite struggling at 136 for six, a crucial partnership between Dunith Wellalage and Kamindu Mendis helped Sri Lanka reach a competitive total of 240 for nine.
This victory marked a significant turn for Sri Lankan cricket, particularly after their recent struggles in the T20 format. The fans, who have consistently supported their team despite the ups and downs, were treated to an exciting display of cricket.
