Stefano Utoikamanu to Leave Wests Tigers at Season’s End
In a big shake-up for the Wests Tigers, prop Stefano Utoikamanu has announced that he will be leaving the club at the end of the 2024 NRL season.
Utoikamanu, who is just 24 years old, had been in discussions with the Tigers about extending his contract. The club offered him a considerable five-year deal to stay, but he has chosen to explore his options in the open market.
This decision comes after a challenging season for Utoikamanu, who was hoping to represent NSW in State of Origin but was not picked for any of the matches. On top of that, the Tigers have been struggling this year, sitting at the bottom of the NRL ladder and facing a potential third consecutive wooden spoon.
His current contract allows him to explore other opportunities due to a clause from a previous deal. This clause permits him to be released if he doesn’t make the NSW team or if the Tigers fail to reach the top eight.
With Utoikamanu leaving, the Tigers will need to rethink their forward line as they head into 2025. His departure adds to the club’s concerns, especially with Isaiah Papali’i moving to Penrith and uncertainty surrounding John Bateman’s future after his loan to Super League team Warrington.
The Wests Tigers have publicly wished Stefano and his family well in their future endeavors, acknowledging his contributions to the team.
