Steve Bégin, the former player from the Montreal Canadiens, has shared some tough news on Instagram. He announced that he has filed for personal bankruptcy.

Bégin explained that since 2013, he invested a significant amount of money into a civil engineering company called Nobesco, which has recently gone under. The financial troubles from this failed investment have seriously impacted his finances.

Nobesco, based in Trois-Rivières, was reportedly in deep debt, with over 13.9 million dollars owed and only 11.9 million in assets. The company officially declared bankruptcy earlier this year in February.

According to business records, Bégin and a partner named Mario Noël were the only shareholders of Nobesco, with Bégin owning the majority stake of over 75 percent.

In his heartfelt message, Bégin expressed a mix of humility and regret, noting that he never expected to face such a challenging situation. He has been dealing with these issues for several months now.

He shared that he placed trust in his business partners at Nobesco, where he previously held the title of vice-president. Unfortunately, this trust has led to negative outcomes for him.

Until 2022, Bégin was highlighted on Nobesco’s website as a co-owner, noted for being an excellent negotiator when securing contracts. The company had several contracts with the Ministry of Transportation worth millions, but customer reviews had turned sour over the past two years, citing unpaid invoices and bad experiences.

This has been a very difficult and painful experience for Bégin, impacting him and those close to him. He clarified that he wasn’t seeking sympathy, but instead wanted to share his story openly.

Bégin, who has always valued hard work and perseverance, assured everyone that he would bounce back stronger than before. He has never been afraid of challenges and intends to rise above this setback.

During his career, Bégin played for the Calgary Flames from 1997 to 2003 before joining the Montreal Canadiens, where he played until 2009. Over his career, he participated in 524 games and scored 108 points.
