Mamelodi Sundowns made a significant announcement on Saturday, revealing that Steve Komphela has returned to the club in the capacity of senior coach. Komphela, who had previously been associated with Sundowns, expressed his eagerness to be back at the club where he felt valued and inspired. He mentioned his enthusiasm to contribute to the club’s endeavors both domestically and across the African continent.

The timing of Komphela’s return aligns with the team’s pre-season preparations as they are preparing to depart for Austria for their pre-season training. This development comes shortly after the departure of head coach Rhulani Mokwena, who left the club after signing a four-year contract just a year ago.

Last year, Komphela left his coaching role at Chloorkop to take on the head coach position at Moroka Swallows. However, the situation has changed as the PSL status of Moroka Swallows has been acquired by Marumo Gallants, prompting Komphela’s return to Mamelodi Sundowns.

While Komphela assumes the role of senior coach, Manqoba Mngqithi continues to lead the team during the pre-season. Sundowns are still in the process of searching for a new head coach to fill the vacancy left by Rhulani Mokwena’s departure.
