A recent study conducted by the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) has unveiled compelling findings on the performance of the world’s first plug-in electric hybrid flex fuel vehicle (PHEFFV). After extensive emissions testing, lifecycle greenhouse gas analysis, and over 34,000 miles of real-world driving, the study indicates that a PHEFFV offers significant advantages over fully electric vehicles.

Last year, the RFA acquired a 2022 Ford Escape plug-in hybrid electric vehicle and promptly converted it to a flex fuel vehicle capable of running on gasoline and ethanol blends up to 85%. Through a 15-month evaluation period, the RFA discovered impressive results when the vehicle utilized E85 fuel.

The report emphasizes, "While some advocate for a rapid shift to Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) as the optimal solution for decarbonizing personal transportation, alternatives like low-carbon ethanol blends present substantial potential for achieving meaningful reductions in greenhouse gas emissions both in the short term and long term." The PHEFFV’s unique combination of plug-in technology and flex fuel capability positions it as the most adaptable and versatile vehicle globally, allowing refueling with any fuel at any time, ensuring optimal convenience and affordability for consumers.

The RFA study arrives at a pivotal juncture as automakers and consumers reevaluate their stance on an all-BEV future, considering plug-in hybrid and gasoline hybrid vehicles as more pragmatic climate-conscious options.

RFA President and CEO Geoff Cooper remarked, "The project aimed to showcase that coupling plug-in hybrid electric technology with ethanol flex fuels represents a valuable avenue for reducing transportation-related GHG emissions without compromising consumer convenience, affordability, and choice. Our extensive analysis of the Escape over 15 months demonstrates the synergies between low-carbon liquid fuels like ethanol and plug-in hybrid technology. Instead of pitting electric vehicles against internal combustion engines, policymakers should embrace market-based approaches that integrate the strengths of both."

The comprehensive report also offers insightful recommendations for automakers, federal and state legislators, and regulators to consider in the pursuit of sustainable transportation solutions.
