Sujata Saunik, a senior IAS officer from the 1987 batch, marked a significant milestone on June 30 by becoming the first woman to hold the esteemed position of Chief Secretary in Maharashtra‘s 64-year history.
Following the retirement of the incumbent Chief Secretary, Nitin Kareer, Saunik was appointed to the coveted role by the MahaYuti government, signifying a momentous step towards gender inclusivity and representation in the state’s administrative leadership.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis played a pivotal role in unanimously selecting Saunik for the role, showcasing unwavering support for women leaders ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections and aligning with the government’s recent launch of the Fourth Women Policy aimed at fostering women’s empowerment.
The official transition of authority took place during a formal ceremony at Mantralaya, the State Secretariat located in south Mumbai, where Saunik officially received the charge from Nitin Kareer, symbolizing a seamless handover of responsibilities.
Prior to her appointment as Chief Secretary, Saunik held the position of Additional Chief Secretary in the State’s Home Department, bringing with her a wealth of experience and expertise from various portfolios including the General Administration Department and public health.
This milestone appointment follows another trailblazing achievement earlier this year when Rashmi Shukla was appointed as the Director General of Police, further emphasizing the state’s commitment to gender diversity and equitable representation in top leadership positions.
Sujata Saunik’s spouse, Manoj Saunik, a former State Chief Secretary from the same IAS batch, adds an interesting familial connection to this historic moment, underlining the couple’s combined legacy of public service and administrative excellence.
