Summer McIntosh, a talented young swimmer from Toronto, is gearing up for her Olympic debut at the La Defense Arena in Paris. As she approaches her 18th birthday, expectations are soaring for this rising star.

McIntosh almost snagged her first Olympic medal at just 14 years old in Tokyo, finishing fourth in the 400-metre freestyle. Now, she’s aiming for a spot on the podium during the upcoming Games where she’ll be competing in the 400 heats and the final.

The competition is fierce, with American star Katie Ledecky and reigning Olympic champion Arianne Titmus expected to race against her. Notably, McIntosh recently set a world record in the women’s 400-metre individual medley and aims to become the first Canadian swimmer to win gold since her teammate Penny Oleksiak in 2016.

She’ll also be competing in the 200-metre butterfly and the 200-metre individual medley. While it’s still uncertain how she will be utilized in relays, McIntosh has expressed a desire to participate in the women’s 4 x 200 free relay.

Coaches believe McIntosh has immense potential. Television commentator Byron MacDonald noted, “There’s unlimited potential here.” He lauded her versatility, stating that unlike Ledecky, who specializes in freestyle distances, McIntosh excels in various event types.

Proper recovery during the nine days of events will be crucial for McIntosh’s performance. She emphasized the importance of staying hydrated and getting adequate nourishment and rest in between her races.

Despite managing a heavy competition load, the mental aspect of competing is just as demanding. McIntosh herself acknowledged that mental strength often carries equal weight to physical strength.

Brent Arckey, her coach, highlighted her unique ability to thrive under pressure, saying, “She’s willing to get very uncomfortable for a really long time, and that’s kind of her gift.”

Summer’s family has a strong background in sports; her mother Jill swam for Canada at the 1984 Olympics, and her sister Brooke has competed in figure skating. With her loved ones cheering her on in Paris, McIntosh will certainly have a familiar support team by her side.

Unlike Penny Oleksiak’s rise to fame at the 2016 Olympics, McIntosh enters Paris under a spotlight, having learned from her experience in Tokyo watching older teammates claim medals.

As McIntosh carves her own path in Olympic history, Penny Oleksiak expressed excitement for her journey, saying, “Summer is carving her own path and it’s an insanely impressive path at that.”
