Suspected Chandipura Virus Outbreak Claims Lives of Children in Gujarat
A recent outbreak of suspected Chandipura virus has resulted in the tragic loss of lives, particularly among children in Gujarat. Health Minister Rishikesh Patel confirmed six deaths attributed to the virus in the state. The affected districts include Aravalli and Sabarkantha.
The authorities have reported a total of 12 suspected cases of Chandipura virus, with six patients currently receiving treatment. Four cases have been identified in Sabarkantha, three in Aravalli, and one each in Mahisagar and Kheda districts of Gujarat. Additionally, patients from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh who sought treatment in Gujarat have also displayed suspected symptoms.
Rishikesh Patel stated that samples from the infected patients have been sent to a lab in Pune for further testing. The results are expected within 12 to 15 days to confirm the presence of the Chandipura virus.
While emphasizing that Chandipura disease is not contagious, the Health Minister highlighted the importance of surveillance in affected areas. Over 18,000 individuals have been screened in more than 4,000 households. Intensive insecticide spraying has been conducted in 2,093 houses to control the spread of sandflies.
Notably, the Chandipura virus, which causes flu-like symptoms and acute encephalitis, had previously surfaced in Maharashtra, specifically in the Chandipura district in 1965. The epidemic later spread to other states, including Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat.
