Sydney Metro New Stations Opening

Today is a big day for public transport in Sydney! The new metro services are officially opening, allowing commuters to travel from Chatswood in the north-west, right under the harbour, and through the busy Sydney CBD to Sydenham.

Commuters are greeted with an extra 15.5 kilometers of rail, providing easy and quick access with six new underground stations and revamped platforms at Central and Sydenham Stations. The first passengers journeying under the harbour kicked off at 4:54 AM this morning.

The metro will be operating on a weekday timetable, with trains arriving every four minutes during busy hours and every ten minutes outside of peak times. It’s a welcome improvement for those traveling through Tallawong and Sydenham, as both stations will see increased train frequency throughout the day.

In total, 445 new metro services will run through the heart of Sydney each weekday, offering the capacity to move around 34,000 people every hour during peak times. This new line is part of the larger M1 Northwest and Bankstown Line, stretching a total of 51.5 kilometers with 21 stations between Tallawong and Sydenham.

The expanded metro network will provide superb connections to Sydney’s major employment, financial, and shopping hubs. It also opens up the new Barangaroo station, which will link more people directly to the harborside area.

Passengers can easily plan their trips by checking transportnsw.info for the latest updates. In the upcoming days, extra staff will be present at stations and on trains to guide commuters as they familiarize themselves with the new services.

As the city adjusts to these new transport options, some stations will continue to have work taking place in their surrounding areas for improvements to roads and footpaths, but this will not impact passenger experiences.

The new metro is expected to transform how people travel in Sydney. A direct ride on the metro from Chatswood to Martin Place will take roughly 11 minutes, while the entire stretch from Sydenham to Tallawong can be completed in under an hour.
