Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Calls for Strong Action Following Hooch Tragedy in Kallakurichi
In the aftermath of the devastating hooch tragedy that struck Kallakurichi in Tamil Nadu, the Chief Minister has taken immediate action to address the situation. The incident claimed the lives of at least 47 individuals, with many others hospitalized due to the consumption of methanol-spiked moonshine. The Kallakurichi Government Medical College Hospital has been inundated with patients, while some have been referred to other medical facilities for urgent treatment.
The State government swiftly responded by suspending key officials, including the Superintendent of Police and District Collector of Kallakurichi. Additionally, a judicial commission of inquiry, led by former High Court Judge B Gokuldas, has been established to investigate the tragedy. The case has been handed over to the Crime Branch – Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) for a thorough examination.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin condemned the incident and announced compensation for the victims’ families, along with closely monitoring the emergency response efforts. As the community mourns the lives lost in Karunapuram, calls have been made for stricter enforcement of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act and enhanced public health awareness on the dangers of consuming illicit alcohol.
Despite past tragedies and regulatory measures, the flow of methanol into illegal brews continues to pose a grave threat. In light of the Kallakurichi incident, there is a renewed urgency to dismantle the illicit alcohol production networks and ensure accountability for those involved in such activities.
