The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has announced the reversal of its decision regarding the non-renewal of contracts for 55 teaching and 60 non-teaching staff members, as per a recent circular released by the institution.

These employees were initially appointed under programs funded by the Tata Education Trust (TET) on a contractual basis and were stationed across TISS campuses in Mumbai, Tuljapur, Hyderabad, and Guwahati.

In a significant turn of events, TISS revealed that ongoing discussions with TET have yielded a positive outcome, ensuring that the necessary resources will be provided to resolve the situation promptly.

Moreover, TET has affirmed its commitment to disbursing funds for the salaries of the affected faculty and non-teaching staff members.

The circular issued by TISS contained notable information, stating that the earlier notice of non-renewal of contracts, dated 28th June 2024, has been officially withdrawn, with immediate effect.

Consequently, all teaching and non-teaching staff under the TET programs are respectfully requested to resume their duties, with salary disbursements scheduled upon receipt of the TET Support Grant by the institute.

Following the initial decision to not renew the contracts, TISS faced criticism from various stakeholders, including the student body and faculty members.

A faculty member highlighted the reliance on grants from the Tata Trust over the past decade, meant for employing additional faculty to cater to various courses, and criticized the administration for failing to secure timely grant renewals.

Another faculty member mentioned instances where the affected teaching staff were actively involved in the interview process for candidate selection, signaling a lack of prior warning from the administration regarding funding challenges.

In response to the ordeal, the Progressive Students Forum condemned the TISS administration for its inability to effectively manage the institute, while also expressing dissatisfaction with the BJP-led Union government for purported apathy towards the situation.

Additionally, the forum highlighted recent mishaps by the Ministry of Education in managing nationwide entrance examinations, attributing these incidents as further evidence of the perceived incompetence within the central government.
