Team USA Wins Olympic Gold in Basketball
In a thrilling showdown, Team USA has clinched its fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal in basketball, triumphing over Team France with a score of 98-87. This summer marked the second stint for Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr leading the team at the Olympics, and it wasn’t without its challenges.
The game saw Warriors star Stephen Curry shine brightly, contributing 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including an impressive 8-of-13 from beyond the arc. This was Curry’s first Olympic appearance, and he certainly made it count, adding five assists, two steals, and one rebound to his name.
Meanwhile, Kevin Durant etched his name in Olympic history, earning his fourth gold medal. He scored 15 points and showcased his versatility with four rebounds and four assists, proving once again why he’s one of the best in the game.
Kerr faced tough decisions throughout the tournament, notably sitting Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum for two games against Team Serbia, a move he later regretted. Tatum did get some playing time in the final but managed only two points on limited shots.
In the gold medal match, Kerr’s choice of players raised eyebrows, especially considering Team France’s formidable lineup featuring All-Defensive First-Team centers. Despite a strong performance from Tyrese Haliburton and Derrick White, the U.S. team needed all its stars to fend off France.
Looking ahead, there’s speculation about Kerr’s future with Team USA, as new contenders for the coaching role emerge. Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra is seen as a strong candidate, bringing his own unique strategies and a willingness to experiment with player rotations, which could be essential for international competitions.
