Telegram Founder Pavel Durov Arrested in France
Pavel Durov, the billionaire co-founder and CEO of the Telegram messaging app, was arrested at Le Bourget airport in France on Saturday evening, according to local reports.
Durov, 39 years old, had just arrived in France on his private jet from Azerbaijan when he was apprehended. Reports indicate that he was the subject of an arrest warrant issued in France.
The Russia-born entrepreneur holds dual citizenship in France and the United Arab Emirates and currently resides in Dubai, where Telegram is headquartered. Durov is estimated by Forbes to have a fortune of approximately $15.5 billion.
In 2014, Durov left Russia after he refused to comply with demands to shut down opposition groups on his previous social media platform, VK. He later sold the company.
Telegram has gained significant popularity, boasting around 900 million active users worldwide. The app offers end-to-end encryption for users’ calls and secret chats, focusing heavily on privacy and security.
While Durov’s arrest has raised eyebrows, the specifics surrounding the warrant remain unclear. Reports suggest it may be related to accusations involving money laundering, drug trafficking, or the distribution of illegal content.
The Russian embassy in France is actively seeking clarification regarding Durov’s situation and stated that there had been no prior request from Durov’s legal team.
