Tensions Rise Amid New York Jets Leadership Shake-up
Amidst a turbulent season for the New York Jets, tensions have escalated following a pivotal internal meeting called by team owner Woody Johnson. According to sources confirmed by ESPN, this meeting, held on September 30, was convened to address concerns over the team’s direction after a narrow one-point loss that left the Jets with a 2-2 record.
The meeting reportedly included Johnson’s top football executives and witnessed discussions that hinted at benching the team’s star quarterback. While some attendees perceived Johnson’s remarks about benching Aaron Rodgers as «said in jest,» others interpreted them as serious, sparking varied interpretations and reactions within the team.
This critical meeting foreshadowed significant staff changes, with head coach Robert Saleh being dismissed eight days later after three seasons. General Manager Joe Douglas followed soon after, marking an intensification in Johnson’s active role in team management following the departures. Johnson has increasingly been involved in personnel and contract decisions, even attending daily sessions with coaches and players.
The Jets, currently holding a 3-8 record, have become one of the National Football League’s major underperformers this season, resulting in Johnson initiating a search for a new General Manager. Johnson’s proactive stance, however, has not quelled the controversies surrounding the team, particularly those involving Aaron Rodgers’ performance.
In a tight 10-9 loss to the Denver Broncos, where the Jets failed to score a touchdown, Rodgers’ continuity was questioned. Although the idea of replacing Rodgers was dismissed at the time, the team later acquired his friend Davante Adams in a move Johnson reportedly advocated. The trade involved taking on a substantial salary commitment, indicative of Johnson’s willingness to invest in support for Rodgers.
Rodgers, approaching his 41st birthday, has expressed a desire to continue playing beyond 2025. However, skepticism persists regarding his future with the Jets, with sources suggesting Johnson may not sanction another season given Rodgers’ current statistical downturn.
Simultaneously, Adams’ future also remains a focal point, given his significant cap charge for 2025. On a podcast, Adams expressed his desire to continue with the Jets, underscoring his vision of a winning future for the team despite recent setbacks.
