Texas A&M’s Quarterback Progress and Challenges: An Analysis
Gigem 247 analyst Jeff Tarpley recently made an appearance on ESPN Central Texas with host Glenn «Stretch» Smith to discuss the Texas A&M Aggies’ football season. With aspirations of reaching the Southeastern Conference (SEC) title game, the discussion gravitated towards the progress of the team’s quarterback.
«Most definitely,» said Tarpley when asked if the quarterback is adapting to the speed of college football. «A&M did a lot of different things with him the other night that we hadn’t seen them do very much at all.» The conversation highlighted the increased reliance on deeper crossing routes, particularly involving H-back players like Trey Watson and Theo Mellon-Ohrstrom. «They completed eight balls to Watson and Mellon-Ohrstrom,» Tarpley noted, emphasizing a shift from only 13 targets at the position earlier in the season.
Tarpley observed the quarterback’s growing command of the offensive strategies, citing a touchdown throw to Moose Muhammad as illustrative of his development. «It was a mesh concept…He was able to be patient, wait on Muhammad to clear on his deeper crossing route, and hit him for the score,» explained Tarpley.
The discussion also touched on the quarterback’s ability to anticipate defensive strategies, specifically in terms of adapting pre-snap decisions like a seasoned quarterback. «It’s very, very important to get your backs and linemen aligned,» said Tarpley, addressing the need to adjust protections on passing downs.
The quarterback’s next major test will be competing against a team known for aggressive blitzing tactics. Tarpley pointed out that Texas A&M’s line-up, and its quarterback, in particular, will have their pre-snap decision-making challenged in the upcoming games.
Meanwhile, an article from the Nashville Tennessean reported that Texas A&M’s quarterback Marcel Reed experienced a challenging start in a recent SEC matchup against Auburn. The redshirt freshman, with roots in Nashville, Tennessee, managed 5-of-10 passing for 48 yards and an interception, as the Aggies trailed 21-0 in the second quarter.
Reed, who attended Montgomery Bell Academy, has played eight games this season, stepping in for Conner Weigman post-injury. He notably led Texas A&M to victory against LSU and started the subsequent games against South Carolina and New Mexico State. Reed’s season statistics include 1,129 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and 375 rushing yards. He ranks third in the SEC for passing yards per completion, highlighting his ability to make significant plays despite ongoing challenges.
