Thanksgiving 2024 NFL Slate Features Traditional and Fresh Matchups
The National Football League (NFL) has once again scheduled a trio of games on Thanksgiving Day in 2024, continuing a longstanding tradition observed over the past 19 years. Among these, the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys will once again take to the field, marking their 59th consecutive appearance on this national holiday.
The Detroit Lions have participated in Thanksgiving Day games each year since 1934, missing only the years during the Great Depression and World War II from 1939 to 1945. Similarly, the Dallas Cowboys initiated their Thanksgiving Day tradition in 1966 and have been a staple on the holiday slate ever since.
On Thanksgiving Day, the Lions will face off against the Chicago Bears early in the day, continuing their divisional battles. Detroit will return to their home stadium after a matchup against the Indianapolis Colts the Sunday prior. Meanwhile, Chicago will complete their three-game stretch against NFC North rivals that began with games against the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings.
The Dallas Cowboys are set to host the New York Giants later in the afternoon. This game will be the Cowboys’ second consecutive against a divisional opponent, having played the Washington Commanders the previous week. Both Dallas and New York have been hindered by player injuries, with backup quarterbacks stepping in for the injured Dak Prescott and Daniel Jones.
As the day progresses into the night, the Green Bay Packers are scheduled to play against the Miami Dolphins in a prime-time slot at Lambeau Field. This will be their second consecutive match at home following encounters with the Chicago Bears and the San Francisco 49ers.
Thanksgiving football is a cherished American tradition, and this year it will also be accompanied by entertainment, including notable halftime performances. For instance, the Lions’ halftime show will feature country music artist Shaboozey, while singer Lainey Wilson is set to perform at the Cowboys’ game. Celebrated violinist Lindsey Stirling will entertain fans during the Packers’ game halftime show.
The Thanksgiving games come amid mixed seasons for the participating teams. As of the current standings, the Lions and the Packers lead their divisions, while the Bears, Cowboys, and Dolphins strive to gain traction in their respective leagues.
