Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra, who was recently reelected as an MP from Krishnagar in West Bengal, made a powerful statement in Parliament, challenging the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Moitra, who had been expelled from the previous Lok Sabha, revealed the personal sacrifices she endured, including losing her membership and undergoing a hysterectomy.

Expelled in December 2023 for her involvement in a ‘cash-for-query’ scandal, Moitra faced scrutiny from the Ethics Committee for accepting gifts and money in exchange for asking specific questions in Parliament. This expulsion led her to surrender her government house as well.

In her return to the Lok Sabha, Moitra delivered a defiant speech, asserting that she had gained ‘freedom from fear’ and vowed to defeat the BJP. Her remarks came after Rahul Gandhi, the Opposition Leader, criticized the BJP over various issues, including the Agniveer scheme and the Manipur conflict.

Responding to Rahul Gandhi’s criticism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh of the BJP rebuked the Congress MP. They accused Gandhi of insulting Hindus by questioning the BJP and RSS‘s representation of Hindu beliefs.

Moitra condemned the BJP for suppressing dissent and highlighted the loss of 63 BJP MPs in the recent elections as a consequence. She criticized the government’s handling of the Manipur issue and accused the Election Commission of bias. Referring to the BJP’s victory as ‘pyrrhic’, she noted that even in traditional Hindi heartland areas, the party experienced a decline in core voter support.
