The Toronto Maple Leafs continued their active NHL free agency period by securing the services of defenseman Jani Hakanpaa, adding to their revamped blue line on Bay Street. General Manager Brad Treliving orchestrated a series of signings, including Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and Anthony Stolarz, before landing Hakanpaa.

Hakanpaa, a towering 6-foot-7 defenceman from Finland, brings a physical presence to the Leafs’ roster. Despite a recent injury that kept him out of action, Treliving made the move to sign him to a two-year deal worth $1.5 million US per year, showing confidence in the player’s recovery.

In their quest to fortify the defensive unit, Toronto opted for a larger lineup this offseason. Alongside draft picks like Ben Danford, the Leafs let go of players like Ilya Lyubushkin and Joel Edmundson, making room for new additions like Hakanpaa.

Hailing from the St. Louis Blues, Hakanpaa found his way to the NHL as a free agent signing with the Anaheim Ducks. After a brief stint with Carolina, he secured a three-year contract in Dallas before landing in Toronto. Known for his physical play and ability to log significant ice time, Hakanpaa adds depth to the Leafs’ defensive corps.
