Two synagogues in Toronto were targeted in what authorities believe to be a hate-motivated offense, as reported by CBC News. The incidents, occurring in the early hours of Sunday morning, were said to have taken place near Bathurst Street and Dewlane Drive, and later near Bayview Avenue and Fifeshire Road in North York.

According to the Toronto Police Service, a suspect on a motorcycle threw rocks through the front windows of both synagogues just after 3 a.m. The same individual is suspected to be responsible for both acts, fleeing the scenes swiftly after each attack.

Chair of the Pride of Israel Synagogue, Steven Bloom, expressed sorrow over the incidents, noting that the congregation discovered the damage as they arrived for services. Despite the vandalism, services continued uninterrupted, showcasing the community’s resilience.

The identity of the synagogues involved was not disclosed by the police, but one of the locations had previously been targeted in similar hate-motivated offenses, including incidents in April and May. The ongoing investigation is being treated as a hate crime, leading to heightened police presence in the affected areas.

Thornhill MPP Laura Smith condemned the acts outside the Pride of Israel Synagogue, stating her deep concern over the timing of the vandalism on the eve of Canada Day. The rise in hate incidents since the conflict between Israel and Hamas was also highlighted by Toronto police, with over 240 hate-related charges laid since October.

Recent data indicates that a significant portion of reported hate crimes this year have been directed towards the Jewish community, followed by incidents targeting the 2SLGBTQ+, Black, and Muslim populations. B’nai Brith Canada’s Judy Foldes urged vigilance from police forces nationwide to safeguard Jewish institutions during these troubling times.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward by contacting the Toronto Police Service directly or providing anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers. Individuals can play a crucial role in assisting ongoing investigations and ensuring the safety of all communities.

With collaborative efforts and increased awareness, communities can combat hate-fueled actions and foster a culture of inclusivity and respect.
