Tragic Death of Kolkata Doctor Sparks Outrage
Recently, the tragic death of a young postgraduate trainee doctor in Kolkata has left the community shocked and angry. The 31-year-old doctor was found dead in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College last Friday. Initial reports indicated foul play, and a civic volunteer named Sanjoy Roy has been arrested in connection with the case.
This incident has sparked outrage among medical staff and students, leading to protests at the college. On Thursday, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose visited the hospital to address the situation and offered his support to the junior doctors who were demonstrating for justice.
During his visit, Governor Bose assured the students, saying, “I promise you justice. My ears and eyes are open.” His words aimed to calm the concerns raised by the medical community that has faced rising violence and threats recently.
The investigation is in full swing, with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) now involved. They are conducting a thorough examination of the case, including forensics to establish evidence linking Roy to the crime.
Compounding the tragic situation, the victim’s family alleges that their daughter may have been gang-raped, pointing to forensic evidence that suggests this is not the act of a single perpetrator. There is a growing demand for justice and accountability, and the autopsy has revealed multiple injuries and details surrounding her death.
Moreover, there has been backlash regarding the initial misreporting of the murder as a suicide. The Calcutta High Court is investigating why it took so long for police involvement in what appears to be a serious crime.
The protests have garnered support from various medical organizations, with many demanding a national law for the protection of doctors following the increasing violence they face. Despite the call to action from the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Associations, protests continue, as the medical community stands firm on their demands.
In a surprising turn of events, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, formerly the head of RG Kar Medical College, faced criticism for comments perceived as victim-blaming. Although he initially went on leave following the backlash, he was reinstated as the Principal of Calcutta Medical College just a day later.
