On the afternoon of August 26, 2024, a tragic event unfolded at Rice University involving two individuals found dead in an apparent murder-suicide incident.

The victims were identified as Andrea Rodriguez Avila, a junior at the university, and a male suspect who was not affiliated with the institution. The alarming discovery took place at Jones College, the residence hall for undergraduate students.

Investigation revealed that Avila had suffered a gunshot wound, while the male suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Campus Police Chief Clemente Rodriguez indicated that the two were in a dating relationship that had reportedly experienced difficulties.

University officials received a request for a welfare check on Avila from a family member concerned about her well-being. Upon arriving at her dorm room, authorities found the two individuals and a note from the suspect indicating his troubled relationship with Avila.

Rice University President Reginald DesRoches addressed the campus community to assure everyone that there was no ongoing threat and emphasized the university’s commitment to supporting its students during this tragic time.

Officers had to conduct a shelter-in-place order for students and staff following the incident, which was confirmed by university spokesperson Chris Stipes. Classes scheduled for the following day were canceled as the community grappled with the aftermath of this incident.
