Tragic Shooting at Michigan State Fair Leaves One Teen Dead
Two 14-year-old boys were shot, one fatally, in a parking lot at the Michigan State Fair in Novi on Saturday evening, according to local police.
The Novi police reported this incident as isolated and stated that there is no ongoing threat to the community. Both victims were transported to the hospital, where one succumbed to his injuries.
Erick Zinser, the public safety director in Novi, confirmed that the surviving victim is currently in stable condition. Both boys are from Detroit, and authorities have not yet identified any suspects related to the shooting.
In response to the tragedy, U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell expressed her anger on social media, denouncing the senseless death of a child and reflecting on the broader implications for community safety.
Witnesses reported that the shooting occurred around 9:40 p.m. as fair-goers fled from the scene. Video footage shared on social media shows a chaotic environment as people hurried to exit the fairgrounds.
The Novi police indicated that initial reports suggested an active shooter situation, prompting a significant police presence. However, they later determined that there was no shooter inside the fair itself.
Authorities believe the victims had taken an Uber to the fair after arriving from Farmington Hills. It is suspected that the shooting may have stemmed from an argument that occurred earlier in the week in another community.
The Michigan State Fair continues to operate following the incident, with increased police presence and adjustments to its operating hours. Entry will now close three hours earlier than previously scheduled.
Officials announced that attendees under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to enter the fairgrounds.
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the Novi Police Department for further investigation.
