Tragedy struck the Sarasota community as former football standouts Brian and Tommie Battie were involved in a shooting incident early Saturday morning, as reported by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. The brothers, known for their talents on the field at Sarasota High and Braden River High, were victims in the shooting that took place in the 3400 block of 17th Street in Sarasota County.
At the scene, Tommie Battie IV, 24, tragically lost his life, while his younger brother Brian Battie, 22, a standout running back at Auburn, was critically injured and is currently hospitalized. The incident, witnessed by deputies at the Tallywood Centre Plaza, also left three others injured, who were subsequently transported to local hospitals in Sarasota and Manatee counties.
Formerly a player at South Florida, Brian Battie made a significant impact on the field with 1,842 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns over three seasons. At Sarasota High, Battie showcased his skills by rushing for over 2,000 yards and earning recognition as a two-time All-American.
Brian’s dedication to the sport was evident during his time under coaches such as Brody Wiseman and Spencer Hodges. Despite facing challenges like a turf toe injury, Battie’s resilience and work ethic never wavered, leaving a lasting impression on his teammates and coaches.
Meanwhile, Tommie Battie, a former cornerback at Braden River High and Sarasota High, may have ended his football career after high school, but his impact on the community was profound. Coach Curt Bradley of Braden River expressed deep sorrow over the loss, emphasizing the support and prayers for Brian’s recovery and the enduring legacy that Tommie leaves behind.
