Tributes Flow for Former Maribyrnong Mayor Sarah Carter
Sad news is circling around Melbourne’s west as former Maribyrnong mayor Sarah Carter has been found dead at her home. The beloved councillor was just 45 years old.
On Tuesday afternoon, emergency services arrived at her residence on Village Way and discovered her body. Victoria Police has since stated that her death is not being treated as suspicious and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
The City of Maribyrnong expressed their deep sorrow, stating they were ‘shocked and saddened’ by the sudden news of Cr Carter’s passing. She was greatly admired for her tireless work supporting the community throughout her 16 years in office.
Federal Labor MP Tim Watts shared his devastation, recalling the significant impact that Sarah had in her role as councillor and advocate for international aid and development. He noted how much she gave to others and how her untimely passing has left a void in the community.
Acting Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece paid tribute to Sarah’s character, describing her as a ‘beautiful person’ and a passionate advocate for the people of Maribyrnong.
Councillor Carter was serving her fourth consecutive term when she passed, having first been elected in 2008. She made history by being the first woman to serve as mayor in Maribyrnong three times.
Tributes have been pouring in on social media from fellow councillors and community members, highlighting her warmth and compassion. Councillor Michael Clarke remarked on the significant loss felt by everyone who worked alongside her.
She was also known for her commitment to gender equality, and earlier this year she joined the board of the state’s gender equity promoting body, showcasing her dedication to making the world a better place.
Friends and colleagues are left reflecting on Sarah’s incredible journey and the legacy she leaves behind, as many in the community grieve this shocking loss.
