In a live interview with Black journalists in Chicago, Donald Trump faced tough questioning and made some controversial remarks about Vice President Kamala Harris. This event took place during the National Association of Black Journalists’ (NABJ) convention, and it certainly stirred up some strong reactions.

Trump, who is the Republican presidential nominee, seemed to be in a combative mood. He was asked about various remarks he made in the past regarding Black leaders and diversity hiring, which led him to lash out at Rachel Scott, one of the moderators from ABC News. Trump claimed that Scott’s questions were asked in a ‘horrible manner.’

During the panel discussion, Trump also questioned Harris’ racial identity. When asked if she was hired merely because of her race as some Republican members have suggested, he responded, ‘Could be, could be?’ This remark came after he made a false claim that he didn’t know Harris was Black until recently, despite her longstanding public acknowledgment of her racial heritage.

Scott pressed Trump on his support of the January 6th rioters, pointing out that many police officers were injured that day. Trump deflected the question and instead talked about gun violence in Chicago. His responses seemed to frustrate both the audience and moderators.

As the interview went on, Trump referred to Scott as ‘nasty’ multiple times, a reflection of his well-known tendency to insult journalists who challenge him. His remarks were reminiscent of the way he treated Black women reporters during his presidency, which drew groans from the audience when he was unable to provide a clear answer regarding the police killing of Sonya Massey.

Massey’s case has been under public scrutiny, especially after police body camera footage showed her being shot while she sought help. It was Trump’s first public response to the incident, and he stopped short of condemning the officer’s actions.

Members of the NABJ had already voiced their concerns over Trump’s invitation to the convention, and many were not pleased with his performance during the event. There was a noticeable tension, especially since Harris was unable to attend the event, which added to the disappointment among members.
