Trump Hesitates on Debating Harris Amid Uncertainty
Former President Donald Trump has not yet committed to debating Vice President Kamala Harris. This uncertainty stems from his belief that Harris may not be the official Democratic nominee.
Harris recently emerged as the front runner for the nomination after President Biden dropped out of the race. With enough delegate support, she is set to be nominated when the Democratic Party gathers for its National Convention next month.
Trump’s campaign team has pointed out that there’s speculation within the Democratic Party, particularly noting former President Barack Obama’s lack of endorsement for Harris. Although she’s securing the nomination, it won’t be official until the Democratic National Convention from August 19-22.
In a change of tone, Trump originally had agreed to three debates with Biden. However, following Biden’s exit, he seems to be cautiously considering a face-off with Harris.
Harris and Trump have not yet finalized dates for their potential debates. Trump has expressed a preference for Fox News to host the debate instead of ABC, citing the network’s perceived bias. He made this point following Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race.
Fox News has formally invited both candidates to a debate planned for September 17 in Pennsylvania, with renowned hosts Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum lined up as moderators.
Past debates have drawn significant viewership, with over 51 million tuning into the last Trump-Biden debate. Given the attention surrounding Harris, her performance will be closely monitored, especially after some Democrats raised concerns about Biden’s capability in earlier clashes with Trump.
Meanwhile, Harris is still searching for a suitable vice-presidential candidate. Several names, including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, have been floated as potential running mates.
Trump has been active in Arizona lately, having held a town hall meeting despite facing legal challenges. His running mate, JD Vance, is also expected to make waves in the state with an upcoming rally slated for the end of the month.
With Harris now leading the Democratic ticket, discussions around her originally planned debates with Vance have changed, bringing fresh dynamics to the electoral landscape.
