Ttc Ceo Rick Leary Announces Resignation After 10 Years Of Service

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), Rick Leary, has revealed his decision to step down from his role after a decade of service. Leary made the announcement during a press conference held at city hall today.

Leary explained that he submitted his resignation this morning, and it was officially approved by the board at their meeting today. His departure from the TTC will be effective on August 30.

Addressing the media, Leary expressed his gratitude for the incredible 10 years he spent at the TTC, stating that it has been the most rewarding experience in his four decades in public transit.

Leary, who recently turned 61 years old, mentioned that with the milestone came a period of self-reflection regarding his personal and professional objectives. He clarified that while he is not retiring fully, he believes new opportunities and challenges await him beyond his current role.

Before exiting his position, Leary underscored the importance of overseeing the recent labor negotiations with the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) 113, which represents over 11,000 frontline TTC workers. He emphasized his commitment to ensuring a new collective agreement with the union before his departure.

Having initially been brought to the TTC in 2014 by former CEO Andy Byford after working at York Region Transit, Leary shared his pride in being part of several first-time initiatives at the TTC, including the appointment of its first Chief of Diversity and Culture.

During the announcement, Leary expressed his appreciation for his colleagues and acknowledged the support of Mayor Olivia Chow, former mayor John Tory, and York Region’s former chair Bill Fisch. He highlighted how moving to Canada enabled him to fulfill his dream of becoming a Canadian citizen, akin to the hockey idols from his youth.

Jamaal Myers, the TTC Chair, commended Leary for his contributions to the TTC’s accomplishments over the past decade and wished him success in his future pursuits. Myers announced that the TTC will disclose its next steps, including plans for an interim CEO, in the coming weeks.
