TUC Disassociates from Planned Protest Amid Police Warnings
The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has announced that it will not be participating in the nationwide protest scheduled for August 1, 2024. During a press briefing held in Abuja on Thursday, TUC President Festus Osifo emphasized that while they support the right to protest, they had not been approached by the organizers to join the action.
Osifo called on President Bola Tinubu to step in and help resolve the ongoing conflict between Dangote Refineries and the NNPC Limited, particularly the issues surrounding fuel supply and crude oil availability.
As discussions surrounding the planned protest fill media spaces and public conversations in Nigeria, the TUC also addressed concerns regarding the recently set minimum wage of N70,000, defending this amount against the dissatisfaction it has garnered among many citizens.
In a related development, the Department of State Services has issued a warning against the planned protest, citing potential violence and disorder. The agency has reportedly identified individuals behind the protest and urged them to reconsider their plans.
The DSS stated that they possess intelligence suggesting that the protest could be exploited by disruptive elements aiming to instigate chaos and promote political instability. They highlighted the need for peaceful dialogue rather than violent confrontation, urging citizens to engage with the authorities to address their grievances.
