According to sources cited by ESPN‘s Pete Thamel, the University of Tulsa is expected to terminate Kevin Wilson‘s position as head coach of its football team. This decision comes after a challenging season which saw the team fall to a 3-8 record, following a significant 63-30 loss to the University of South Florida on Saturday. This marks the sixth coaching vacancy in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) this season, highlighting a trend of rapidly changing coaching tenures within the conference.

The disappointing performance of Wilson’s team included a record of 1-6 within the AAC, contributing to the administration’s determination that a change in leadership was necessary. Sources within the university cited a lack of satisfactory results and a desire for a cultural reset as key factors influencing the decision. The Golden Hurricane has lost nine games by over 30 points during Wilson’s two-year tenure.

Ryan Switzer, currently the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator, has reportedly accepted the interim head coach role. Switzer is a notable figure in college football, having been a two-time All-American at the University of North Carolina, subsequently playing three seasons in the NFL.

This shift in coaching personnel is accompanied by Tulsa’s intent to increase its commitment to football, aiming to compete more effectively within the AAC. This involves plans to enhance funding to support championship-level competition.

Wilson’s appointment at Tulsa followed his role as head coach at Indiana University from 2011 to 2016, where he compiled a record of 26-47 with two bowl appearances. Afterward, he served as the offensive coordinator under Ryan Day at Ohio State University from 2017 to 2022 before assuming the head coach position at Tulsa.

The AAC coaching carousel continues as the universities seek to reinvigorate their football programs amid increasing competitive pressures. Alongside Tulsa, other universities like Charlotte, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic University (FAU), Rice, and Temple have also made coaching changes this season, indicating a new trend in the Group of 5 conferences, where shorter coaching tenures have become more common.
