Tungabhadra Dam’s Emergency Water Release
Hospet, Karnataka – In a surprising turn of events, the 19th gate of the Tungabhadra Dam experienced a serious malfunction late Saturday night. A chain snapped, which led to a sudden outflow of 35,000 cusecs of water into the river.
This incident marks the first major issue at the dam in 70 years, according to officials on-site. They stated that in order to carry out restoration work, it’s necessary to release around 60 tmc feet of water from the dam.
Following the incident, the district in-charge minister, Shivraj Tangadagi, visited the dam early Sunday morning. To manage the situation, water was released from all 33 gates of the dam starting Sunday morning.
Currently, approximately one lakh cusecs of water is being released as a precautionary measure. Officials are urging nearby residents to remain alert as the water levels continue to fluctuate.
The dam’s incident sparked concerns regarding safety, with authorities warning communities in the nearby regions to be cautious.
