Two Unique Memorials for Writer Vaikom Mohammed Basheer to Mark 30th Death Anniversary
Two unique memorials are underway in Kozhikode to honor the renowned writer Vaikom Mohammed Basheer as the 30th anniversary of his passing approaches. The first memorial, named ‘Aakasha Mittayi’, is being constructed in Beypore, the town where Basheer resided. Meanwhile, a museum titled ‘Mathilukal’, one of his famous short stories, is being built near Chathamangalam by the Dayapuram Educational and Cultural Centre.
The ‘Aakasha Mittayi’ memorial in Beypore is expected to be completed in three months, featuring a cultural hall, library, research hall, amphi-theatre, park, auditorium, cultural centre, and a ‘Garden of Letters’. The museum in Dayapuram will showcase manuscripts of Basheer’s works, including letters and writings from literary critic M.M. Basheer’s collection.
Noteworthy items in the museum’s collection include the initial pages of ‘Balyakalasakhi’, the screenplay of ‘Bhargavi Nilayam’, manuscripts of ‘Bhoomiyude Avakashikal’ and ‘Anuragathinte Dinangal’, as well as an unfinished play script based on ‘Mucheettukalikkarante Makal’. The museum aims to represent Basheer’s multifaceted life, including his contributions to the freedom struggle and Kerala’s social reform movement.
Esteemed filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan is scheduled to inaugurate the museum on July 20, marking a significant moment in honoring the legacy of Vaikom Mohammed Basheer in Kozhikode.
