In a significant development within the Janata Dal (United) party, KC Tyagi has resigned from his position as the national spokesperson. Tyagi’s resignation has sparked speculation regarding the internal dynamics of the party, which is led by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

In a formal letter addressed to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Tyagi cited personal reasons for his decision, stating, «I request you to relieve me from the post as I have not been able to do justice to the post due to my involvement in other works.» This resignation has led to the appointment of Rajiv Ranjan Prasad as the new national spokesperson.

Sources indicate that Tyagi’s resignation may be attributed to internal disagreements within the party regarding his recent statements on various sensitive issues. In particular, his comments related to the Israel-Palestine conflict and the lateral entry of professionals into government positions deviated from the established party line.

Tyagi had previously made strong statements urging the central government to halt arms supplies to Israel and advocated for peace in Gaza. Party insiders noted that such statements were made without prior consultation with senior leadership and raised concerns about their impact on the party’s standing within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Throughout his tenure, KC Tyagi served as a prominent voice of the JD(U). He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2013 to 2016 and previously represented Hapur in the Lok Sabha from 1989 to 1991. Tyagi was also a signatory to a recent statement issued by several former MPs condemning the actions in Gaza, which stated, «India cannot be complicit in this genocide.»

Party sources further noted that Tyagi’s remarks on various issues, including the Supreme Court‘s decisions affecting SC/ST classifications and the UPSC‘s recruitment processes, were presented as party policy, potentially exacerbating tensions within the party.

With Tyagi’s resignation, the JD(U) leadership appears to be favoring a more unified front, especially as it seeks to navigate its alliance with the BJP. Senior party members expressed that Tyagi’s frequent public statements may have complicated relations with the BJP, which is crucial for maintaining a solid coalition moving forward.
