Ulajh Struggles at the Box Office on Opening Day
The much-anticipated film, Ulajh, starring Janhvi Kapoor, hit theaters recently but didn’t quite make the splash everyone was hoping for. On its opening day, the movie pulled in a mere ₹1.10 crore across India, which indicates a lackluster response from audiences.
According to reports, Ulajh, directed by an unnamed filmmaker, managed to achieve only 13.02% occupancy in Hindi theaters on its first Friday. Morning shows saw around 7.38% occupancy, while afternoon shows did slightly better at 10.85%. The evening and night screenings had 13.06% and 20.78%, respectively, which still reflects a rather slow turnout overall.
Before its release, there were already signs of weakness as Ulajh struggled to sell more than ₹1000 tickets in pre-sales. After seeing the film’s opening performance, actor Gulshan Devaiah took to social media to share his thoughts, stating, “’Word Of Mouth’ is the Mt Everest of publicity. It can’t be created without the organic support of the audience. This is what every movie in the cinemas hopes & prays. #Ulajh is in cinemas today.”
In Ulajh, Janhvi plays a young Indian Foreign Service officer, Suhana, who is depicted as the youngest Deputy High Commissioner. Her character finds herself navigating through a web of deception and danger while working at the London embassy. Gulshan Devaiah portrays an undercover agent, adding to the film’s suspense.
The trailer hinted at a gripping story filled with hidden truths and betrayal, with Suhana facing life-threatening challenges due to an internal leak affecting covert agents. Despite this intriguing premise, reviews have been mixed, with the Hindustan Times noting that the film attempts to cover a lot of ground—from commenting on nepotism to addressing sexism in the workplace, ultimately taking itself too seriously.
