One of the biggest jaw-droppers in House of the Dragon’s second season comes when a seemingly random guy from King’s Landing named Ulf, played by actor Tom Bennett, suddenly becomes a dragon-riding sensation. How did this happen? Rumor has it that he’s actually a long-lost bastard son of Baelon Targaryen, which turns out to be true!

Ulf is introduced as a down-on-his-luck character from Flea Bottom who’s been living his whole life under the thumb of the rich and powerful. He’s just a working-class guy who has had enough, and overnight, he finds himself sitting on a dragon, changing everything about his status.

In the latest episode, we see Ulf trying to figure out his own identity. While he used to just hang out in bars and cheer for Rhaenyra, circumstances change when he makes a big journey to Dragonstone. When he arrives, he’s attacked along with other bastards and ends up finding Silverwing, the dragon that belonged to Queen Alysanne Targaryen.

In the books, Ulf is portrayed as a lowborn guy unsure of his lineage. But in the show, it’s implied that he really is the son of Baelon the Brave. This adds a whole new twist to his character, especially as he grabs hold of a dragon.

As his plot unfolds, it seems like Ulf is not just taking a backseat. He has great ups and downs throughout his journey. Early in the season, he survives his first battle with the help of Team Black, and Rhaenyra, impressed with his efforts, even knights him. However, his ambitions start to shift as he dreams of becoming a true Targaryen lord.

Ulf quickly becomes a character that complicates the storyline. After successfully helping Team Black, he starts to consider betraying Rhaenyra, which could lead him on a dark path. His aspirations only grow higher after he claims a title from Daeron Targaryen.

Still, in the mix are plenty of twists. Ulf’s journey hints that he may not stay loyal for long. He, alongside Hugh Hammer, ends up defecting to Team Green after a major battle, leading viewers to ponder just how far he’s willing to go to achieve power.

At the climax of all this, Ulf gets into heaps of trouble. In a dramatic turn of events, he survives a chaotic battle while others do not and ends up in a precarious situation. Ultimately, just like the twists of fate in Westeros, the stakes keep rising for Ulf, making him a character worth keeping an eye on!
